New Camera For The Trip To Sicily

I am getting this one.

Cheendruh! tells me that this camera will perform "just fine" for what I need a camera to do. No, it is not the high-ender. But crap----$649.95 buys me a 6.1 megapixel unit that I can take pictures with and be proud to post right here.

Sheila (MOB), Bleu (DOS), Murray, Joe? Your thoughts too, please.

Oh, and Bazza. You too, please.

Heck----ALL of you who are into photography.

The unit ships out tomorrow (Monday the 8th) and should be here, two day express, on Wednesday.

My friend, Summer and I decided that we are no longer going to refer to these contraptions as cameras. They are now PICTURERS. That's what they do, after all. Since when has anyone ever talked about cameraing something? Right. Never. So.

Sure, I won't have any Kodachrome. But I will have a Nikon camera.

I'm so excited. It's a wonder I can sleep at all....

This will indeed serve your purposes very well. Right away I'm loving the choice because it's a Nikon! lol And I'm jealous... I soooo want a Nikon digital SLR! Have a wonderful and safe trip.

BWOOKIE: Ha!!! I was just now over at your blog, posting away. Came back here to add a line I had forgotten and PRESTO! Here you are.

Good. I think it will do just fine.

I'm a Canon fan myself, but I bet that one is loverly, too. :) Whatever you do, make sure to take millions of pictures to justify the cost. I think that's the best policy. Oh, and post them for us. ^_^

CANDACIA: Yeah. I fretted about that. I was really looking toward Canon. I heard they're balls o fun. The MRE's brother has one and goodness gracious. Nice photos. I think his was an 8.1mp res.

MICAELI: Now I'm wondering if you had a Nikon to use or a Canon. And which model. The guy at B&H Photo (Mike was his name. No lie.) told me he had the D40 and loved it.

You'll have a ball. My first SLR was a Nikon. Nikon makes good picturers. Today's DSLRs are really camera-shaped computers with lenses. Yours will get a workout in Italy sans doot. It's so much fun - like hunting, but nothing gets killed. Considering what you've already managed to capture with your cameraphone, you should get some great stuff with your D40.

Thought you were AOL! Just be sure to have plenty o-memory cards, 'cause wouldn't you be pissed if you were walking around the Vatican one sunny morn and La Pope was taking a constitutional and you're brand-new Nikon beeps "Memory Full".

You'd kick yourself all the way back over the ocean.

Pretty exciting!

Hello Mr. Gawpo, do I know you? You look a bit familiar as though we've met before. It seems to me I've been here before too...I'm have a deja vu or is it a flashback? The one thing I don't remember is that you were going to Sicily...perhaps you will run in to some of my distance relatives. The ship manifest from Ellis Island says my Nunna came from San Cataldo I believe. Sailing from Palermo. Where are you going?

I have a DSLR- a Canon Rebel XT and I LOVE it. I love that I can change lenses too..but I am STILL learning all it can do. Look out when I finally learn it all! You're going to have a blast.
This is one long winded comment!

JEAUX: Camera shaped computers with lenses. Nicely put. Like a time machine shaped like an airplane. I just want one of those big, hurkin' white 3 foot long telephotos like that guy Norbert Rosing uses for Polar Bears.

VDT: Hi, Sarah! I just have to ask: Is AOL anything like AWOL? Cuz if it is, well......LOL!!!!

As Joe puts it: Il Papa shall be mine. Oh yes, he shall be mine.

LEESAOCEANDREAMUH!: Boy, I sure do catch a lot of pokes in the ribs from my bestest of friends. Yes, tis I.

I will go to Google Earth and check out San Cataldo relative to Camporeale.

I wish I could afford both cameras. I was really leaning toward the Canon. But my dad bought a Nikon D80 and he loves it. The D40 is 6.1mp and the D80 is 10.1 which is way more than I need.

xoxoxoxoXO!!!!

Egads. A WWWW O L. Jimminy Crickets. Although, I COULD have thought you were AOL, perhaps switching from Verizon, whatever.

Think it's past my bedtime. I know. Sad.

It's past 9:00 pm somewhere...

This new picturer looks amazing.
Make sure to take all the books etc when you travel as you are sure to need them for reference.
Mine is a Canon S5 IS, not an SLR, and I'm still trying to get used to it. Make sure to get an extra memory card, and plug adapter so you can charge your batteries in Europe.
Make the piccies HUGE, so we can CSI 'em too..!
When do you leave...?

Don't listen to them Gawpo. It is a lousy camera. You don't want it. When it gets to your house send it to me.

VDT (SARAH): Ha!!! That's exactly what I was thinking. After about 45 minutes of trying to figure out whether I'd switched to AOL, I came up with that other one. Took a chance. Clueless am I. Sigh...

B&W: (wow. i like that! it's about photography. what you won't do to pitch the hobby, b!) Yes. I shall. How long a drive is it from Rome to your house? I would love to snap you. But not in two.

Ps: Yes, I hear those mainland Italians can be very dangerous and pickpockety. Ever-vigilant shall I remain. But not so much that I would miss the visual drinking of all that I've read about all these years and now will be able to breathe. Welcome home, by the way. My 44 days (with only three days off) are keeping me from the blog. I will come bearing gifts from the new picturer.

SHEILA: I leave on the 13th. Get there on the 14th. Fourteen hours over, twenty back! Argh. I will definitely make them---as the Donald would say---YOOOOOGE! for perfect CSIing.

I bought two 4giggers and an adaptor. I am bringing along my DVD player so that I can (FINALLY!) study for my Instrument Flight Rules rating en route to and from. Along with THAT, I purchased a power supply that will give me up to 14 hours of play time for the DVD player. Nice, huh?

ARMALICIOUS: I love, love, LOVE your Garage Band song! Already told you that, but want to brag (heh-heh) in "public" right here. You have no idea how much fun we would have over there. Two Paisanos? Are you kiddin' me? Fuh-GETTA bout it!

QUILLY: Thank you! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! If only my other so-called "friends" would be so honest.

I am heading it off by re-routing its delivery through tracking numbers. It should be there tomorrow.

Once again: Thank you!

Yeah, what mum said.
Wow G, how exciting. I didn't know you were going to Sicily. Or did I? I am sorry for not knowing, anyways. Forgive me G.
The camera kicks my camera's ass, so I am not entitle to opine.
However, I agree with mum on taking extra memory etc.
When do you leave? You know you will be journalling this entire trip now that you have the picturer.
I am so excited for you!!!

Hi Gawpo, Just dealing with a middle-of-the-night allergy attack here. I am completely jealous of you! That's the camera I want. I love my old film Nikon. And as you know, I lovelovelove Italia and want to go back so bad!! Alas, putting children thru college comes first. You are so lucky...

I hope it's very good to you.

I promised myself long ago not to spend too much money on a camera - no matter how great it is, my thumb always looks the same.

CHEENDRUH!: Thank you, Cheendruh. I will be deleting only the worst. Bringing 9mb total memory between three cards. The 6.1 res. will save me some memory, compared to the 10.2, yes? Travel through me any way you like. And can't wait to get back for some hug time with BB and you and THE REST of the fam damily.

LIMERS: Camera envy? Really? Well, then. I might as well tell you that mine is HUGE.

BLUE TSG: Yes. You did know I was going to Sicily. In fact, you were the one who told me. But then I forgot. And then I remembered, but then you forgot. And stuff.

Yours photographs RAWGHK, Blue. You know I love them. More. More. xo, G

Oh, CLAIRE: Until now, I have been jealous of YOU and anyone who has gone to Italy. Finally! Finalmente!
Me? No kids. No putting through college. You are fortunate for that.

JAY: You take pictures of your thumb? Wow. I will try to do that with the new picturer. LOL!

MS. VICCANCE: YIIPPPPEEEE!!!!! I am glad you think so. I got on line and did the tracking thing for the heck of it and it is already leaving Portland as of this morning. Will be here tomorrow. w00t!

xoxoxoxoxoXO! G

I know nothing about the camera (heck, I find my Canon SLR camera does well with Kodachrome film), but ... do you need someone to come along with you to Italy to carry your bags?

PAUL: What if? Just what IF! Can you imagine? I would then, of course, carry yours. I would.

I, too, am leaving for Sicily but on 10/14, my second trip, this time heading west to Trapani, but will arrive in Catania and taking the train to Palermo. I was there in March this year and had the most amazing time. If you've never been, you're in for a real treat. I just left a comment on welshcakes limoncello inquiring about the weather so I know how to pack

ANNECHUNG: Whoa! Really? That is amazing. Email me and I will get you my cell phone number. This is a mind-blower for me since I have never been across the pond. My sister has been twice, but not since the 70s. Camporeale doesn't look like it is a booming city and I am glad for that. I am looking for quaint. Don't forget your picturer. Maybe we can caloborate on a post? Ciao!

Hey, you asked my opinion! Damn, now it's totally obvious that I'm weeks and weeks behind on reading your blog.

Well anyway, I think that particular picturer is a very good choice and should make you happy. Haven't used it, but have heard lots of good stuff about it, plus I own a couple of its cousins. Happy picturin', Gawps.
