Four Minutes Of Healing And Hope
Take four minutes to listen to this song. Watch the guitar players in the background do something on their guitars that will hopefully do what it did for me, namely, restore perspective and bring meaning to the human experiment.
The singer is Jackson Browne, showcased on David Letterman's Late Night. The lyrics are good. The singing, excellent. But what touches me is the "totality of the circumstances." That is usually a cop's phrase to articulate what was going down and why certain decisions were made. The performance of this song is a totality of circumstances, a collage. This is human beauty.
We will never know why someone would want to spray bullets into the bodies of fellow human beings, in the manner that took place in Virginia, in any manner whatsoever. If we did know why, then that would explain it. And I don't want that. No one wants that. I'm working on just trying to explain the resurrection. That's more than enough. Making sense of what is good in life is enough. The other stuff, well...it's maybe just to be endured.
Here's a song to help bring it all back just a little bit:
51 Comments:
Oh Gawpo...that music literally "sends me"....I just closed my eyes and listened to the beauty of it..."like the wind that comes up at night caressing your face when you sleep"...is that not beautiful! or what!??? :-)
Thanks for that!
That was positively beautiful and to be quite honest I was so enamored by the guitar players I didn't hear the lyrics but heard the song. Does that make sense?
I also absolutely loved your description prior to listening to this, "The performance of this song is a totality of circumstances, a collage. This is human beauty."
Sometimes dear Gawpo, your WORDS are like music.
XOXO
VICCANCE: Excellent report on that image of being refreshed and washed in a nighttime wind. The bad dream of the shootings is hard to wake from. You've encouraged more hope for me. Thanks for that.
LISAOCEANDREAMER: Oh, Lisa---I love that we share what this performance connects us to. Yes, it makes sense: the song more than the words. The totality of it. You help me sing, Lisa. You help me sleep easier and wake more easily as well.
Perfetto!
Its true, human beauty, makes the enduring a little easier, eh?
LOGO: Yes. A bit easier. Or at least just a little less awful. Neutrally buoyant will work for now.
You are a poet Gawpo. You always find the words to put everything into perspective.
How do we make sense of a senseless act?
What happened in Virginia was a nightmare, but perhaps life IS a dream.
This performance was beautiful, and the line that sticks in my mind is the same one that grabbed Vicci.
like lisa i had to listen twice because i was so entranced just by the guitar. the lyrics are so marvelous too. thank you for drawing our ears, ears and hearts to something beautiful so our spirits could be refreshed.
SHEILA: Your comment came into my time at 4:44. That became my "power" number many years ago. It was the time I woke to most every morning. Now it is my telephone prefix. And has been since 1981. That doesn't make much sense, either. But it is easier to live with than that senseless act.
"And you find yourself looking through tears, at the love you feel slipping away
Though it's not the kind, of love you might hope to find
If tears could release the heart, from the shadows preferred by the mind
Like a wind that comes up in the night, caressing your face while you sleep
Love will fill your eyes with the sight, of a world you can't hope to keep
Dreaming on after that moment's gone, the light in your lover's eyes
Disappears in the light of the dawn, but the morning brings, strength to your
restless wings, and some other lover sings to the sun's bright corona,
I know all about these things, Linda Paloma."
I have to come back and listen again. I am too huried to get to work.
And one can't make sense of what happened, because hate is senseless.
Grazie, Gawpo.
Grazie.
Back in the day I used to love Jackson Browne. I kind of lost touch. Thanks for the reminder. Evil finds its way and we must soldier on and be strong. Creative beauty feeds our strength and soothes our souls.
Loving tribute. I expect nothing less from you. Your whole life is canopied with Light, Mister. I adore worshipping the Living with you!
LIMERS: You popped in while I was responding to Sheila this early morn. I was up early to go razor clamming and had to run out the door to meet Eric, the new guy at work. He wanted a clamming lesson. I did not disappoint. Thank you for joining the circle of re-appointment. How beautiful that song is, those guitar players. I get goosebumps each time I view it. I just got done watching it again and I found the chords so I can now play along. Sigh....
QUILLY: Yes. Senseless. How could it possibly be figured out? I keep coming back, too. To learn beauty's true intentions.
ARM: Prego, Signora Arm. Prego. It's in there, isn't it?
Oh, CLAIRE: Yeah, I lost touch as well. Time for our reunion, yes? Soldier on. I love that! I am fed and soothed and soulful now. Thanks for the soothing visit.
BLUE TSG: Kum-Bai-Freakin'-YAH!, my sister. Huge smile here. I reciprocate the adore.
My best mate, is the sister of the lead guitarist of Supertramp. What I really want to know: Why are all the baddies called Cooper?
Sincerely,
Carol Cooper.
SHRINK WRAPPED SCREAM: Yeah, well...give me a minute here.....Yeah. Maybe a coupla hours ago or so I did leave a comment on Diesel's Caption Contest post and I did drop the name Cooper, so I'm just going to take a wild shrink-wrapped guess here and hazard that you are referring to my reference to that Northwest Baddie of all Cooper Baddies, D.B. Cooper. Am I warm? Am I close?
Now let's get to the guitar stuff: Your best friend's brother is the lead guitarist of Supertramp. Without Googling (or, in this case, possibly even gargling), I'm going to guess his name ends in Cooper too? Naw. Couldn't. That would be too much.
Now for your greeting proper: HELLO THERE, CAROL COOPER!!!! Welcome to my Annals (so to speak). I must now go see what's up in your neck of the woods. Ciao, Bella!
OOps, didn't mean to be insensitive here, sorry. (Think I've gate-crashed on something I shouldn'tve.)
Delete me, I deserve it..
SHRINK WRAPPED SCREAM: Now way! You are in whether you like it or NOT, Missy. Insensitive? Where'd you get that? Not at all. You puzzle. I like.
SHRINK WRAPPED SCREAM: And I do believe you left a question unanswered.....hmmm???
Hey,
Maybe I haven't trespassed, after all? Love your site - will visit again..
SHRINK WRAPPED SCREAM: Dude. Not only have you NOT trespassed, you have been officially beckoned. Check your email.
Peace.
Out.
Aww.. xx
SHRINK WRAPPED SCREAM: Now, that's more like it.
Xs back atcha. G
Wow...beautiful. Thanks for that, Gawpo.
CHIKKEN-Druh!: You wekkcom. See you next week!
Thank you. :)
KATIE: You are so very welcome. Hope you liked that.
Are you ever going to blog on a regular basis again?
I love Jackson Browne. I'm glad you still had this up, last time I was by, I was on the "no speakers" computer.
ARM: Ugh! Too many fires on my iron. Uh....well, you know what I mean. Yeah, it's hard to get here for composition. Sigh....but each time I get an ARM chewing, something just seems to materialize......ever notice that? Hmmmmmm????
KAT: Yay! Me too. Is that guitar stuff amazing or WHAT.
I would like to make a comment.
CANDACE: You have your hand up, Candace. Do you have a question or a comment for the blog? You do? Okay then, Candace. Go ahead with your question or comment. Oh, that WAS your comment? Very well, then. Yes, Candace. I guess that DOES count as a comment. Thank you, Candace. You may take your seat. And thank you again for contributing to the class.
The guitar players were awesome.
Cant help thinking that somehow, whatever happened was simply because a child wasnt raised right.Or maybe loved enough.
Ps: I am hearing schizophrenia. But there are many reasons why he should not have been able to purchase a firearm. Many reasons. In my state, any history of mental hospitalization will pop up on the criminal background check. In Virginia, it didn't. Now people are dead. Families and friends are grieving. And many blog posts were inspired.
Ps, Ps----love the shoes!
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for that.
Huh. I swear I left a comment here. Hey, you're not deleting my comments are you, you bastard? JK, but I really did think I left a comment before. I'm a confused individual.
HARLEY BLUE: Score! Glad you liked it. Your dad would like it, too, I'm sure.
DIESEL: Why yes, now that you finally ask. I was just trying to see how long it would take for you to notice. Don't worry, though. I have them all saved in a box and will send them (C.O.D., hope you don't mind) after I go ahead and delete this one. I only needed one more. Got my limit. Guess I should also apologize for stalking you via Terra Server and Google Earth, but hey---what else are you gonna do with blogging?
Thanks Gawpo- you've got such a beautiful soul...
Actually- I think you are an earthly representation of the Holy Spirit...the "Comforter".
Reading you is like snuggling down in my feather blanket on a cold day- with a mug of hot chocolate and a good book.
Perfectly Lovely...really~
:)
MAYDEN'S VOYAGE: You slay me. I am tamed. I recline, recumbant, and slain in your spirit. Thank you for that list of kind words. Of course, ever the linguist, I just have to parse the word "comfort" to its origins: COM- (meaning "with" and FORT meaning "strength." You bring me to strength, Ms. Voyage.
Oh Man - that music just makes me feel......I mean really just feel.
You're silly.
Everyone else has said it all.
It gave me chills. Very touching.
PRINCESS EXTRAORDINAIRE: That's what I'm talkin' UH-BOUT! It was a lucky find.
DIESEL: I think Gawpo MEANS silly in Swabezie. Or something.
SNAVY: Isn't it nice when we treat each other to some good head-nods, Snavs? And talk about a smokin' HAWGHT profile pic! I don't really think you know what you go goin' on, girlfren.
And then she asked (very quietly) "is he ever going to post again?" She asked it very, very quietly, in fact, because she, herself, had been terribly unproductive on the posting front herself, and she saw the hypocrisy in asking such a question, but considering that she had just put up two (subtanceless, granted) posts on her blog, she felt she could get away with it. Possibly.
I'm with Candace. But I won't ask it quietly (becauase I'm not a quiet person). It seems that my first "chewin'" didnt amount to much....
Gawpo, don't make me come out there and make you write something new.
CANDACE: (sssssh. hey. it's me. it's gawpo. no. over here. yeah. hi. i really shouldn't be saying anything, but yesterday i had an experience. yeah. and when i have an experience, i tend to post. i'm here, in fact, AT gawpo labs and have an inside and exclusive interview going with the experience region of gawpo's brain! isn't that exciting? sorry i have to whisper. it's crowded in here, but the experience selection committee is very busy putting their next piece together. something about helicopters. that's all i can tell you right now. i've said too much already. gawpo out.
you WILL have the decency, won't you, to keep this under the flying underside of your profile's foot? thanks. sssssssshhhh...)
ARM: (hey! ARM! hey! it's me. it's gawpo. yeah. hi. how are you. me? i'm doing just fine. but enough about me. i have something to say to YOU. sorry i have to whisper, but if you just look up above where i am typing out letters to make words to make sentences here to you, you will find out why. not yet. don't look up there yet. i still have more to say to you. yeah. first i have to tell you something. and if you don't read the words, then you won't get wheat i am saying; what i am telling you. does that make sense? i hope so. okay. here it is: you should post that cranky deleted post that we didn't get to see. but maybe some other day when you can laugh. okay. now you can go look above and get your answer to why i am whispering. sssssssshhh....)
p.s. i LOVE the new profile pic. you look very alluring, mysterious, knowing, and nonchalant all at the same time. i know these things, linda paloma.
gawpo out!
Gawpo you are too much. Yes, maybe someday I'll re-post that cranky post I deleted. Thanks for sharing your experience, by the way.
Yay!!! I think that, if you wrote it, you deserve to express it; to put it out there. Some day I will get all cranky-pissy and do the same. I have nothing to hide from my blogger buds.
And slice those dills so thin that you can see through them. You will thank me, I'm tellin' ya!
I compromised. I posted part of what I deleted last week. The rest has been edited to make sense based on the fact it is being posted today as opposed to last Monday.
